Do It Right: Storage and Packing Tips
When it’s time to remove items from storage, you’ll be glad you took time to follow some important packing and storage tips offered below. Also note:
♦ While we provide excellent security, you should use a high quality lock on your unit. Locks are available for sale in the office or ask the site manager for a recommendation.
♦ It is recommended that you avoid leaning items against the walls of the storage unit and that you store items on wooden pallets. When available, we’ll happily let you use our wooden pallets for free. Check with the office on availability.
♦ Check your insurance coverage. Do not assume that your homeowner or renter insurance will cover your belongings while in storage. You may need to purchase insurance.
Be ‘box smart’
♦ Use boxes that are a uniform size. They’re easier to stack.
♦ Fill boxes to the top. Add crumpled newspapers, if necessary. Half-filled boxes can collapse if anything’s stacked on them.
♦ When packing boxes, try to limit the weight to 30 lbs. or less per box.
♦ Label each box on all four sides with numbers, seal with tape and make a list of the contents to take home with you. The box numbers should correspond with this master list.
Packing Tips
♦ To save space, fill interiors of appliances with linens, clothes and stuffed toys.
♦ Stuff towels between the washing machine and the inner tub of the washing machine to keep the tub from rotating. Never use shredded paper in washing machines or dryers as it can get into the machines and cause damage. Wedge doors open while keeping appliances in storage.
♦ Use furniture drawers for delicate items.
♦ Use trash cans to store shovels, hoes and rakes.
♦ Prepare items for storage: Rust-proof metal objects (bicycles, file cabinents, etc.) or wipe them with an oily rag.
♦ Pack books flat, not standing on end, which may cause damage to the spines. Place books with the spines alternating and add cushioning to the box.
♦ Never store anything in sealed plastic bags. The humidity can cause damage to your goods.
♦ Wax wood furniture before storing it. Use sheets or cotton cloth to cover furniture.
♦ Do not use printed newspaper to pack with. The ink may smudge off on your items.
Storage Tips
♦ When storing files, label all boxes and construct aisles so files are easily seen and accessible.
♦ When storing a refrigerator, leave the door ajar to prevent mold growing.
♦ Use protective covers and treat wood surfaces before storing.
♦ Place furniture on wooden pallets to avoid mildew and condensation damage.
♦ Mattresses should be covered and stored on side.
♦ Never store pictures and mirrors flat. Wrap in cardboard, mark “Fragile” and stand on end.
♦ Break down items such as table legs, and store tabletops and sofas on end, to save space.
♦ Store frequently used items at the front of the unit and valuable items in the back where they’re less likely to be bumped and moved.
